The Adult Drug Court, launched with just four participants, has evolved into a multi-program initiative offering court-supervised treatment as an alternative to incarceration.

The Second Judicial District Court will recognize the 30th anniversary of its Adult Drug Court with a public event on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Complex Litigation Courtroom, located at 75 Court St. in Reno.

Established in July 1995 under the direction of Judge Peter Breen, the Adult Drug Court began with a small group of participants and has since expanded into a broader network of specialty courts focused on treatment and rehabilitation for individuals with substance use and mental health disorders.

These include the Felony DUI Court, Medication-Assisted Treatment Court, Mental Health Court, Prison Re-Entry Court, Veterans Treatment Court, and Young Offender Court.

The courts aim to reduce incarceration and recidivism by offering intensive, court-supervised treatment programs.

A multidisciplinary team supports each program, consisting of judges, attorneys, court coordinators, treatment providers, parole and probation officers, peer support specialists, education and vocational providers, and drug and alcohol testing staff.

The event will feature guest speakers, reflections on program milestones, and the presentation of a certificate of gubernatorial recognition. Light refreshments will be served.
