Local artists have a new opportunity to leave a lasting mark on a major project at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

The Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority has announced two new public calls for artists as part of its growing permanent art collection. The artwork will be featured at a new Police and Airport Authority Headquarters, known as the HQ, which will serve as the future home for Airport Police and staff.

The application process is also changing. Officials say future artist calls will now be handled through CallForEntry.org, an online platform where artists can create a free account, upload portfolios, and receive notifications about new opportunities.

The art is part of the MoreRNO infrastructure program, a more than $1 billion effort described as the largest modernization project in the airport’s history. Multiple areas across the airport campus will include commissioned public art designed specifically for each space, with selected artists paid for their work.

“This is an exciting opportunity for artists to help shape the visual identity of our airport and surrounding facilities,” said Cris Jensen, Interim President and CEO of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority. “We are looking for creative, inspiring works that reflect the spirit and character of the Reno-Tahoe region.”

Under the program, at least 1% of design and construction costs for qualifying public projects is set aside for art through the Arts at the Airport initiative. Officials say that it ensures art remains part of the experience for travelers, employees, and the community.

The current calls will follow a hybrid request-for-qualifications and request-for-proposals process. Artists or artist teams are asked to submit past work along with ideas for new, original pieces tied to the region.

Each project has a budget of $20,000. Plans include five wall-based works and one mural inside the police station.

Applications must be submitted through the CaFE platform and are due by June 17. Additional details are available on the airport’s website.

Another opportunity is expected later this spring, focusing on custom-designed furniture as part of a nationwide search, with local artists encouraged to apply.
