The Ron Wood Family Resource Center has been participating in Share Your Christmas for over 10 years. They say they look forward to it every year because it helps feed their clients all the way through spring.
Belinda Takhar, deputy director for the Resource Center, says, "Outside of being a very fun event, it's a necessity. Share Your Christmas every single year helps feed our families for months, if not longer."
The Resource Center's food pantry feeds 500 families every month, but Takhar says that number drastically increases around the holidays every year.
Another partner, Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, serves about 44,000 meals each month, but the need for donations has heavily increased this year due to the recent government shutdown.
Lane Meyer, director of operations for FISH, says, "We saw a huge increase in food. In one week, we gave out more pounds of food than what we'll probably bring in for this food drive, so the food insecurity in our area is a clear and present danger."
All our partnered food pantries will accept non-perishable foods\ and canned goods. However, Meyer says they're always in need of protein.
"Canned meats are a huge thing because we do like to give out the protein," she said. "We're missing chili, canned pasta, and mac n cheese."
And as for Ron Wood Family Resource Center, Takhar says anything that can be microwaved will really help their clients, "Not all of our families have stoves, and so microwavable things are always helpful, but the non-perishable goods are gold."
We'll be accepting food donations this Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, the Governor's Mansion in Carson City, the Carson Valley Inn in Minden, and Raley's in Fernley.
You can also donate by texting "share" to 50155.
