A 911 call reporting an apparent threat of violence sent Carson High School and Sierra Lutheran High School into lockdown on Monday afternoon, prompting law enforcement to search both campuses before determining there was no active shooting.
At approximately 1:41 p.m., the Carson City Emergency Communications Center received a call from a man who identified himself as distraught and said he was entering the high school to kill students. Dispatchers also heard sounds in the background that were similar to shots being fired.
According to the Carson City Sheriff's Office, the initial call left dispatchers unsure whether the incident was at Carson High School in Carson City or Sierra Lutheran High School in Douglas County. Both schools were placed in lockdown while patrols from the respective agencies responded.
Sheriff Furlong said School Resource Officers assigned to Carson High School determined early in the response that there was no active shooting taking place. The school remained in lockdown while deputies searched the estimated 300,000-square-foot campus.
The lockdown at Carson High School was lifted at approximately 3 p.m. after the searches were completed. No threats or injuries were found at either school.
Earlier, school officials said buses would continue their regularly scheduled transportation for middle and elementary school students. After those drop-offs, buses were expected to return to Carson High School at about 3:45 p.m. to pick up high school students and take them to their regular drop-off locations.
The matter remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Carson City or Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
