In recognition of Older Americans Month, the City of Reno and the Reno Senior Citizen Advisory Committee will host a series of free events throughout May aimed at encouraging socialization and community participation among older adults.

These events are part of an effort to address social isolation, which affects one in four Americans over 65, according to the National Institute on Aging.

Organizers say that the socializing events such as art shows, ice cream socials, poetry gatherings, and recreation activities are designed to help boost cognitive function, reduce depression and loneliness as well as help with overall well-being.

The event schedule includes:

  • Information Fair: May 1, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Washoe County Senior Center, 1155 E 9th Street
  • Annual Senior Art Show & Reception: Art on display May 5 through June 13, weekdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., McKinley Arts and Culture Center, 925 Riverside Drive
  • Ice Cream Socials with Document Shredding:Poetry Group: May 12, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Washoe County Senior Center
    • May 8, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Teglia’s Paradise Park
    • May 15, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Dorothy McAlinden Park
    • May 22, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Neil Road Recreation Center
  • Art Appreciation Day: May 14, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center, 1301 Valley Road
  • Downsizing Seminar: May 23, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Sierra View Library, Reno Town Mall, 4001 S Virginia Street
  • ‘Scam Jam’ Fraud Prevention Fair: May 29, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., McKinley Arts and Culture Center
  • Sock Hop: May 30, 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Washoe County Senior Center

  • Pickleball Fest: May 23, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Plumas Gym, 475 Monroe Street
