Scam Alert

The Elko Police Department is warning of warrant scams after receiving reports from victims.

A scammer will call the victim claiming to be law enforcement and saying the victim has a warrant for their arrest according to a post from Elko Police on Facebook.

Law enforcement will not contact a person by telephone to inform them they have a warrant, nor will they ever direct someone to purchase gift cards or go to Coinstar to pay for bail or fines.

If someone contacts you via telephone representing themselves as law enforcement and you are not certain of who they are, inform them that you will contact them back through a law enforcement dispatch center or through their office.

If you think you may be a victim of a scam and want advice, the Elko Police Department is happy to answer any questions you might have.

You can contact Elko Dispatch on their non-emergency line at (775) 777-7300 or the Elko Police Department at (775) 777-7310.
