A community forum aimed at raising awareness about human trafficking as a form of organized crime will take place Wednesday, July 30, at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.
The event is being presented by Carson City Juvenile Services in partnership with Xquisite and Advocates to End Domestic Violence, and will run from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Ormsby Room at 911 E. Musser Street.
The event will feature local detectives, advocacy groups, and service providers discussing the scope of trafficking and its impact both locally and nationwide.
According to organizers, the discussion will focus on current issues surrounding human trafficking and the challenges faced in identifying and addressing the crime in Carson City and beyond.
“There are over 27 million victims of human trafficking in the world today. You can sell a drug once. You can sell a person over and over and over again, making this criminal enterprise system one of the most powerful and lucrative on the planet,” organizers stated.
The full scope of human trafficking remains difficult to measure due to the hidden nature of the crime.
Victims are often coerced into protecting their traffickers through threats and violence, making it hard for them to escape or seek help.
Organizers describe human trafficking as “modern-day slavery” due to the level of control traffickers exert over their victims.
The event is open to the public and aims to raise awareness and provide insight into how organized crime networks fuel human trafficking operations around the world.
