The Internal Revenue Service’s criminal investigation arm is hiring new special agents, with positions available in northern California, Nevada and Utah.

The nationwide recruitment effort is aimed at adding investigators as the agency handles tax fraud, money laundering and other financial crimes. The job announcement is open for 14 days through USAJOBS.gov.

IRS Criminal Investigation is the law enforcement arm of the IRS and investigates criminal violations of the Internal Revenue Code. Its work also includes cases involving narcotics trafficking, public corruption, health care fraud and identity theft.

The agency currently has 2,189 special agents working across 16 field offices in the United States and 13 overseas attaché posts, making it the sixth largest federal law enforcement agency.

Applicants face a new step in the hiring process. External candidates for special agent positions must complete a pre-employment assessment. The Office of Personnel Management offers information and practice assessments through its Applicant Resource Center to help candidates prepare.

The positions come with federal salary and locality pay, health and life insurance, retirement and pension plans, paid annual and sick leave, and access to the Thrift Savings Plan. Special agents also receive specialized training and opportunities for career advancement.

People interested in applying can find qualification requirements, resume guidance, education and experience requirements, assessment information, and required documents through USAJOBS.gov.

IRS Criminal Investigation said the hiring effort is intended to support timely enforcement of federal tax and related laws while addressing increasingly sophisticated financial crimes.
