Prescribed burn

The Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, working with the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, plans to restart prescribed fire operations tomorrow, March 3, continuing through March 6 if conditions allow. Officials say work could extend through winter depending on the weather.

These controlled burns help reduce overgrown vegetation to protect local communities, infrastructure, and natural resources from wildfires.

Planned burns include the NV Energy Rx site, covering 5 acres of piled vegetation on the Lower Kingsbury Grade in Douglas County, and the Upper Kingsbury Urban Lots Rx site, covering 4 acres on the Upper Kingsbury Grade.

Officials warn the public that some areas may close temporarily for safety. “Watch for warning signs along roads near all prescribed fire areas before and during burns,” said Public Affairs Specialist Lisa Herron.

Homeowners may notice smoke during the burns. For air quality updates, residents can visit AirNow online or download the app. Drivers should slow down and turn on their headlights when encountering smoke on the road.

Weather conditions will be evaluated before each burn, and operations may be canceled if conditions are unsafe. People can stay updated through the forest website, social media channels, and the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team Prescribed Fire Map. County emergency management officials will also be notified when burning begins.
