A man has been sentenced to 70 years in prison after being convicted of setting his ex-girlfriend on fire.
A man who was found guilty of intentionally setting his ex-girlfriend on fire was sentenced to 70 years in prison on Wednesday.
The Washoe County District Attorney's Office says 34-year-old Jeremy Chatman was convicted of all charges against him, by a jury.Â
Chatman was given consecutive sentences of 8-20 years on both the Attempted Murder charge and the Deadly Weapons enhancement, 6-15 years on the Domestic Battery charge, and 6-15 years for the Battery by a Parolee charge for a total of 70 years in prison, with eligibility for parole after 28 years.Â
Police responded to an apartment building on Selmi Drive in December 2021 where they found the victim.
Prosecutors say officers found the 31-year-old woman, sitting in a puddle in a parking lot covered with burns. They say she suffered third-degree burns to her face, head and upper body.
Chatman was charged with Attempted Murder with the Use of a Deadly Weapon, Domestic Battery with the Use of a Deadly Weapon Resulting in Substantial harm, and Battery by a Parolee with the Use of a Deadly Weapon Resulting in Substantial Bodily Harm.
During trial, prosecutors say the victim testified after she was doused in gasoline, Chatman looked directly at her and lit her on fire without saying a single word.
Chatman had been granted parole on October 1, 2021 in connection to an Attempted Eluding case and was on parole when authorities say he attempted to murder the victim.
