Neil Road police activity

2:55 P.M. UPDATE:

Principals from Smithridge Elementary School and Pine Middle School issued messages to families after both campuses were placed in lockdowns early Thursday morning.

Each principal said that campuses were placed on lockdown due to a report of police activity near their campuses.

Pine Middle School Principal Leah Ramsey said teaching continued during the incident, while Smithridge Elementary Principal Mike Dixon said the school's normal drop-off routine was not interrupted.

Lockdowns are now lifted at Pine Middle and Smithridge Elementary schools after nearby police activity.

Reno Police say they were called to the Neil Road area just after 8 a.m. on the report of a suspicious person armed with a gun. As a precaution, the schools were put on lockdown.

Officers searched the area and found a man who was detained - and later released after they determined no crime had occurred. Police say the original caller didn't initially recognize the man as a tenant.

Police tell us there's no threat to the public.

The Washoe County School District posted the lockdown information on its website just after 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, and then posted the updated details about a half-hour later.

We have a crew on scene right now getting more details.Â
