JULY 8 UPDATE:
New details have been released in a deadly shooting involving an Elko County Sheriff's Office deputy that happened in June.
Nevada State Police are conducting the investigation into the incident.
On June 25, around 7:30 p.m., the Elko County Sheriff's Office got a call from a woman saying the suspect, identified as 74-year-old Robert Crooks, was shooting at her through her bedroom wall.
A video released by Nevada State Police on YouTube plays the 911 call made by the victim on that night. She describes what happened with a wavering voice, saying she felt something when shots were fired but that she was not hit by gunfire. The video, linked here, includes images and audio that some might find disturbing. Viewer discretion is advised.
A deputy responded to the scene just before 7:40 p.m. and ordered Crooks to come out with his hands up, but Crooks did not obey his commands, the deputy said.
Moments later, the deputy fired multiple shots from the passenger side of his car, saying Crooks came out of his garage with a gun.
Crooks was later found to have had an AR-15-style rifle in his possession.
Additional law enforcement arrived on scene just after 7:50 p.m. and approached Crooks to try and give medical aid. Ultimately, Crooks was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators have since been able to determine that multiple shots were fired inside the home before law enforcement arrived.
In their video, the NSP says Crooks had an extensive criminal history, including assault with a deadly weapon, domestic battery, possession of illegal weapon, and resisting a public officer.
If Crooks had lived, he would have been charged with attempted murder with a deadly weapon, domestic battery with use of a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon on peace officer, discharging firearm into a structure, aiming firearm at a human being/discharging when person might be endangered, and ownership/possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
According to NSP, the facts at this time indicate that the deputy responded to an armed person in self-defense and the interest of public safety.
Their investigation is ongoing.
The deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
