You may start noticing more signs around the community advertising the upcoming elections, however NDOT is reminding everyone that political signage is not allowed on state highway property.

And it's not just political signs, they also prohibit all other advertising signs such as yard sales, events, realtor and other businesses.

NDOT says it's important to know that state road property doesn't just stop at the side of the road but can extend further past sidewalks, fence lines, and even urban state roads and streets.

"There's also regulations on larger signs, think of billboards," said Jeff Freeman, engineering services manager for NDOT. "Any sign that is of really large size has to be over 660 feet away from our right of way."

By state law political signs less than 4 by 8 feet can be posted on private property next to state roads no more than 60 days before an election.

Freeman says any signs breaking Nevada state law will be safely removed by staff.

"So our staff will patrol the roadway and when they find a political sign that is within our right of way, they will carefully remove it and try not to damage it and take it to the nearest maintenance station for storage where a candidate can pick the sign up," he said.

He tells us that owners could also be fined up to $250. According to NDOT, advertising signs along highways can be distracting and cause safety hazards.

"They can obstruct your line of sight so you can't see oncoming cars, they can also distract you and distracted driving is a major concern on the highways these days," he said. "They can also become litter, wind-born in the wind events that we have in northern Nevada."
