Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford has joined a coalition of 19 attorneys general to file a motion seeking to block an executive order from the president on elections.
In a release, the office of the Nevada AG referred to the order as an unconstitutional, antidemocratic, and un-American attempt to impose sweeping voting restrictions across the country.
The executive order requires proof of citizenship to register to vote, directs the Department of Homeland Security and DOGE to review state voter rolls, and requires all absentee and mail-in ballots to be received by election day to be counted, among other things.
On April 24, a federal judge blocked parts of the order, saying the Trump Administration could not enforce parts of it requiring federal election officials to assess whether people who are registering to vote are citizens.
“This executive order is an attack on democracy and on the sovereignty of Nevada and every other state,” said AG Ford in a release. “The president does not have the power to regulate elections — as such, this executive order is nothing more than an attempt at an illegal power grab. I co-led this lawsuit because I cannot let this attempt stand. Nevada’s elections are free, fair and safe, and the president cannot illegally interfere with our states’ legal responsibilities for political gamesmanship.”
