OCTOBER 1, 2026 UPDATE:
The Nevada Supreme Court has reversed a woman's 2024 murder conviction, finding that a district court violated her right to due process.
In court documents, the court remanded Katrina Carvalho for a new trial before a different department.
Carvalho was accused of fatally shooting her sister's boyfriend in 2021.
Her defense team attempted to argue that it was equally likely that Carvalho's sister committed the crime.
During closing arguments, they were interrupted by the court, which instructed the jury not to consider the argument.
The Supreme Court found that this was in error, as alternative-suspect defenses are legitimate, and the district court's actions removed Carvalho's right to that defense.
