After being in the works for over two and a half years, Nevada will be getting its only World Athletics certified indoor track facility, and it will be in Reno at the Reno-Sparks Convention center.
The project is set to be complete by December 2, and it will serve much more than just collegiate athletes.
"Having a world class facility for collegiate teams to be here, but also for the youth competitors to master's level competitors and involving the Reno Tahoe area with USA track and field and drawing those high-level meets. It's going to be really wonderful to put Reno-Tahoe on the map as an indoor track and field destination," said Donnie Nelson, Track and Field Specialist with the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority.
The track itself is the standard 200 meters, and the facility will also have long jumping, pole vaulting, a 1,200-person capacity and more.
The track is portable which helps the convention center host other events throughout the year.
Because the indoor track season runs from November to February, members of the project think it will help some surrounding businesses.
"For those that are in the hospitality industry, they would know that is our shoulder season or softer season so having a product that differentiates us from our competition that can drive room nights and economic impact to our region during that time of year was very attractive," said Mike Larragueta, President/ CEO for the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority.
The first indoor meet at the new facility will be December 5th and it is open to the public.
