Power Safe NV Helicopter

Anyone traveling in the area of Lake Tahoe may catch a glimpse of NV Energy, taking to the skies to complete some fire mitigation work.

Started earlier in October, and lasting through November, customers and visitors to the area will see the NV Energy helicopter working overhead.

The helicopter will assist in replacing power poles and clearing large logs and brush that pose fire hazards to infrastructure in the Tahoe Basin.

Crews will be using the helicopter because of the steep, mountainous terrain in that area.

There may be brief disruptions to traffic and trails between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. while the work is ongoing.

There are no anticipated power outages with this work.

The work is a part of an NV Energy project called "Power Safe NV." During the project, NV Energy will be rebuilding a four-mile stretch of power line between Hidden Beach Plaza to Thunderbird Lodge.

Affected areas will include:

  • U.S. Highway 50
Intermittent closures near Spooner Summit and Glenbrook
Intermittent closures near Spooner Cut-Off Road
  • State Route 28
Intermittent and full closure of lanes along State Row 28 in Crystal Bay and between Sand Harbor and Thunderbird Lodge
Lane closure of State Route 28 near Sweetwater Road
  • Trails
    East Shore Bike Path
    Bear Mountain Trail
    Chimney Beach Trails
    Daggett Loop Trail
Tahoe Rim Trail to the East of U.S. 50

Any other customer impacts, including potential temporary displacements for customers who live in the flight path of the helicopter, are being communicated directly to the affected customers.
