Today is the day - the 33rd annual Share Your Christmas Drive-by Food Drive is now underway.

You can help make a difference in our communities by helping to feed families facing hunger by donating either non-perishable food items, money, or both at one of our FOUR donation locations, which are located throughout the region on Friday, December 12, from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m.

We hope you can come out and give; every little bit counts!

Although the Food Bank of Northern Nevada is at the helm of this event and provides for all locations, each of the four individual donation locations collects donations in the name of a specific charity, who are partner agencies of the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.

The Carson Valley Inn will be collecting donations for the Carson Valley Community Food Closet.

The Carson Valley Community Food Closet is a non-profit that was created in 1989. Its focus is to provide supplemental food to people in need, bringing food security to those in Douglas County.

The Food Closet became a reality when a need was identified in the community by a previous Douglas County Director of Social Services and members of the Carson Valley United Methodist Church, and was originally opened to serve the community in the garage of the church with the help of several other local churches, service clubs, businesses, and individual volunteers throughout the community.

It would later open a second location in downtown Gardnerville, inside the Carson Valley Heating and Air Conditioning building.

The Food Closet says that after four years, the community's growing needs caused them to seek a larger space, and in 1996, through a block grant and hard campaigning, they became joint tenants in the then newly constructed Hussman Building, which they say they eventually outgrew and had to store most of their palletized food stores on a local ranch.

In 2019, after a successful capital campaign the Food Closet built a brand new facility that combined distribution services with warehousing capabilities and with everyone's hard work and a partnership with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, the Food Closet has been the foremost provider of food assistance throughout Douglas County since 1989 and is the only organization capable of handling a half-million pounds of donated food annually.

The Food Closet provides food to residents throughout Douglas County in the form of weekly and/or monthly allotments, made possible through ten different programs, some of which are in partnership with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and other organizations.
