The Nye County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) has released bodycam footage of the fatal shooting where a deputy shot a man who was wielding a machete.
The victim in the August 6th shooting has been identified as 36-year-old Troy Plascencia of Amargosa Valley, NV.
According to the release, if Plascencia had survived the shooting, he would have been charged with resisting a peace officer with a weapon, and assault on a protected person with a weapon.
The deputy who shot Plascencia has been identified as Deputy Michael Short, who has been with the NCSO since 2024.
Deputy Short has been placed on administrative leave with pay, pending DA review of the evidence. NCSO says that this is standard procedure after a shooting.
In the video, the footage shows the deputy arriving on scene. He bangs on the side of the trailer where Plascencia has been reportedly destructive and has a brief exchange with the man while he's still inside.
Plascencia then opens the door and stumbles down the stairs. At that point, Deputy Short is able to see that Plascencia is wielding a 18-inch machete.
After repeated commands to stop and put down the machete, Plascencia walks closer to Deputy Short, saying "Man, shoot me," and "The chest or the head?" after raising his machete to his head.
According to the report, Plascencia refused to stop approaching the deputy - at that point Deputy Short fired two shots.
The deputy then advises Dispatch that shots have been fired, and that Plascencia is dead.
The initial investigation showed that Deputy Short only fired two rounds, and both rounds hit Plascencia.
The Nye County Sheriff's Office says that this is the final statement that will be released regarding the shooting.
