People are calling for local agencies to improve what they say is a dangerous intersection on Veterans Parkway.
Pesaro Way and Cesena Avenue meet Veterans at an intersection with two stop signs, turn lanes, and no other improvements.Â
The Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County (RTC Washoe) said it's planning on changing that soon.
"Currently, we are working on the intermediate design plans," said Ashley Hurlbut with RTC Washoe.
Hurlbut is the project manager for RTC's next spot improvements project. She said it will improve safety at five intersections in Reno, including this one. If all goes well, they'll start construction later this year.
"We are scheduled to start construction in the summer of 2026," Hurlbut said, "and the improvements will be constructed by the end of the year. in 2026."
Hurlbut said the design phase of the project is 60% done.
While many neighbors are calling for a traffic light, Hurlbut said they're considering another option to make left turns safer: get rid of them altogether.
"We are proposing to install median islands that are going to restrict some of the left-hand turn movements," she said.
With these medians, you'll need to make a U-turn to do anything other than turn right. For example, if you're turning left from Pesaro Way onto Veterans, you would instead have to turn right, then make a U-turn at Curti Ranch Road. Other turns would need to be made at Rio Wrangler Parkway.
RTC Washoe said it's still designing the project, so we'll see what they do with those left turns.
The agency said community feedback is a factor in choosing which projects to prioritize. You can give feedback at its public meeting or its contact form.
