The Sparks Planning Commission has put a wrench in plans to build hundreds of new homes on part of Red Hawk Golf Course.
Commissioners held a public hearing Monday night to discuss how they'll move forward with the proposal.
Many people showed up to share their concerns about this matter, so much so that people were asked to sit outside the chamber because there were no seats left.
Kristen Da Haan is a Concerned Community Member who tells us, "I'm going to move if there is a house that is just 10 feet away from me, in front of me, when I have been able to look at these ponds and open space for the past, however long I can't live here. I know that my family, we would have to move."
Many people shared their concerns for the area wildlife too stating that the new builds would affect a whole ecosystem that's home to Wingfield Springs.
Mary Llyod, another concerned community member, said, "Some species play such vital roles in maintaining healthy ecosystems that they are known as keystone species. Protecting endangered species is not just about protecting all wildlife. It is about protecting the balanced relationships and living systems that sustain us all together on this planet."
After hearing the public comments of concerned neighbors and more about the sewer issues and infrastructure issues that were researched, the Sparks Planning Commission unanimously decided to deny the comprehensive plan of the development.
The motion will be presented to Sparks City Council for final decision.
