The Animal Foundation wants pet owners to keep their furry friends in mind when it's hot outside.

Leaving a dog in a hot car, heading out for a midday walk, or keeping pets outside without shade can lead to overheating.

Common signs of heat stroke in dogs can include rapid panting, thick or sticky saliva, a dark red or purple tongue, and diarrhea or vomiting.

If you suspect heat stroke, officials recommend getting out of the sun, applying cool water all over their body, giving them small drinks of cool water, and taking them to the vet.
