A Red Flag Warning will be in effect Friday afternoon for parts of Northern Nevada and California as low humidity and gusty winds create conditions that could allow fires to grow quickly.
The National Weather Service in Reno issued the warning from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday for Surprise Valley in California, Eastern Lassen County, the Northern Sierra Front including Carson City, Douglas, Storey, southern Washoe County, western Lyon County and far southern Lassen County, as well as Northern Washoe County.
Forecasters expect west winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Afternoon humidity levels are expected to drop between 7% and 15%, with the conditions lasting three to eight hours.
The National Weather Service said the combination of gusty winds and dry fuels can cause a fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain it.
People are urged to avoid outdoor activities that can create a spark near dry vegetation, including yard work, target shooting, or campfires. People should also follow local fire restrictions and check weather.gov/reno for updates and livingwithfire.info for preparedness tips.
