As Nevada continues to welcome new residents, deputies are reminding drivers about Nevada's vehicle registration requirements, license plate display laws and resources available to report potential violations.

According to the Carson City Sheriff's Office, all cars in Nevada must display a rear license plate that is securely fastened, unobstructed, legible, and at least 12 inches off the ground. A front license plate is also required if the car has a manufacturer-provided mounting bracket.

New residents to the state must register their cars within 30 days of establishing residency or after purchasing a car. Nevada drivers who recently purchased a car may operate it without a moving permit for up to three days after the purchase if they carry proof of ownership or purchase and proof of liability insurance in the car.

Vehicle registrations expire on the exact date shown, and there is no grace period.

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles offers online services through MyDMV at dmv.nv.gov, including registration renewals, address changes, movement permits, Rapid Registration for out-of-state and private party cars, sale reporting, and a Report Violation tool for suspected unregistered cars.

With all Nevada DMV offices operating by appointment only, in-office wait times are about one month. Drivers are encouraged to use MyDMV whenever possible.

Driving without registration or with a license plate not assigned to the car violates NRS 482.545 and NRS 482.555. The civil penalty is up to $1,000 and may be reduced to about $200 after compliance. A car also may be impounded.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office said it will continue enforcing traffic safety laws and educating the public throughout the year as part of its efforts to reduce crashes and save lives. Deputies also reminded drivers, passengers, and pedestrians to make roadway safety a top priority.
