New Year's Eve

With a new year coming, New Year's Eve celebrations will take place around Northern Nevada.

REMSA, in an online post, reminds the public to be safe, smart, and to take care another with these tips.

Champagne corks can fly at 50 miles per hour, which can cause serious eye injuries. REMSA says always point bottles away from people and valuables. You can also use a towel to control the cork when opening.

REMSA advises to never mix alcohol with prescription or over-the-counter medications. By doing this you can experience dangerous side effects like respiratory depression or severe intoxication.

Party food can also sit for hours. REMSA advises you to discard any perishable items after two hours to prevent foodborne illness.

During the holiday, many people also tend to light candles and use holiday lights. Officials say to unplug lights or unlit candles before bed.

Many celebrations are also taken to the streets, bars, clubs, restaurants, and more. REMSA advises you to walk in groups, stay in well-lit areas, use crosswalks, and wait to make sure drivers are stopping before crossing.

Alcohol is also a huge part of New Year's Eve. Always have a designated driver, plan ahead for public transportation, and update your rideshare app.
