The Reno City Council has decided to put a temporary moratorium on new data centers.
The moratorium will last for 30 days while the city nails down a new set of rules.
Many people attended the meeting where the decision was made to share their thoughts, with many against the centers due to potential negative impacts on the environment.
"They're not looking into the long-term impacts, because whether or not you live near that data center, your water is still going to be impacted," said Elena De La Paz, Water Over Data Alliance and Educator. "If you'd like to go fishing, there's not going to be any fish for you to eat with your family or to go out on a hobby."
Some spoke against the idea of a moratorium, though, saying data centers create much-needed tax revenue for the city, as well as providing jobs.
Lauren Knox, a Senior Planner with Development Services, gave a timeline of the process surrounding the moratorium going forward.
"Council just adopted a pending moratorium. It's part of our two-stage process to enact a moratorium," said Knox. "So first we start with this pending moratorium resolution. It's in place for 30 days. And then we will come back to Council on June 1 with a final moratorium for their consideration at that point."
Officials said a final moratorium will lay out a complete time frame and have more specifics on how long it will last.Â
