The Washoe County District Attorney's Office says it has convicted a 38-year-old Reno man on two counts of Assault with the Use of a Deadly Weapon.
Prosecutors say the conviction of Armando Rios Cordova, resulted after he pointed a loaded BB gun at two different victims in a residential neighborhood near a school.Â
According to Prosecutors, the case began in May 2024 when Reno Police received two separate 9-1-1 calls for the area of Paradise Park near Bernice Matthew's Elementary School on the report of a man pointing a handgun at people.Â
The DA says the first victim a 33-year-old woman said she had been unloading her baby from the backseat of her car when Rios Cordova stopped and pointed a handgun at her and pretended to fire it.Â
They say the second victim, a 29-year-old man, was taking his preschool-age son to the nearby elementary school when he saw Rios Cordova walking down the street with a gun in hand, Rios stopped and pretended to fire the gun at the victim and his son twice.Â
The DA says as police searched the area for Rios Cordova, several witnesses were able to identify him as being in the area, which allowed officers to locate him near High Desert Montessori School, at which point he was detained and arrested.
They say during his arrest, law enforcement officers were able to determine that Rios Cordova had been carrying a loaded BB gun, which they found was concealed in his waistband.Â
Prosecutors say that at trial, both victims testified in the case, where they both explained how fearful they were for their safety and the safety of their children, that neither of them knew Rios Cordova before he pointed a gun at them, and how the incident led them both to move out of the area.Â
The DA says that sentencing for Rios Cordova is set for February 12, 2025, before the Honorable Egan Walker.Â
