More than 2,000 overdue parking tickets have been paid off following recent upgrades to the City of Reno’s parking enforcement system.

The City of Reno has collected payments on 2,157 parking tickets, totaling $67,890.97 in fines and fees, after restoring access to registered owner information and resuming mailed notifications to people with unpaid citations.

City staff confirmed the update in a memo to the mayor and council dated July 24.

The effort is part of a larger parking program improvement plan that began in September 2024, when the city hired Dixon Resources Unlimited, LLC to study municipal parking operations and recommend long-term strategies for better management and technology use. Phase I of the Parking Action Plan has been completed, and Phase II is scheduled to be released by late summer.

In May, operational oversight for the parking program was moved to the City Manager’s Office.

A review of the system revealed that a key software support contract had been canceled in August 2024, resulting in a lapse in access to registered owner data. Without that information, the city was unable to send notices or bill people for unpaid parking tickets.

The city re-engaged its software vendor on May 30. System updates were installed by June 5, and registered owner data was successfully integrated into city systems by June 10.

On June 20, staff reimplemented full access to address lookups, allowing notices to be sent out again.

As payments come in, the city is exploring next steps to improve collections, including reconnecting to the Department of Motor Vehicles for registration holds.

That upgrade is expected to cost about $55,000 and take three to four months to implement once funding is secured. Officials are also in talks with other jurisdictions to identify possible cost savings through shared solutions.

Unpaid tickets may be referred to collections if not resolved, and city staff will continue monitoring revenue weekly. Further operational changes are expected in the coming months, with periodic updates planned for the council.
