Reno warns residents not to flush ‘flushable’ wipes during Public Works Week

Reno officials are asking residents to stop flushing so-called “flushable” wipes, saying the products are clogging the city’s sewer system and creating extra work for wastewater crews.

According to the City of Reno Government in an online post, wipes do not break down like toilet paper and can clog pipes, pumps, and lift stations, creating “giant tangled masses” that crews then have to remove by hand.

The city said labels describing wipes as flushable do not mean the products are dissolvable. The post added, “A Hot Wheels car is also technically flushable if you’re determined enough. That doesn’t mean it belongs in the sewer system. (Please don’t flush Hot Wheels either.)”

Officials said the only things that should be flushed are the “3 Ps”: “Pee, Poop, and ( Toilet ) Paper.”

The warning was shared as part of Public Works Week and highlighted the impact improper items can have on Reno’s wastewater system and maintenance crews.
