Construction on Pyramid Way in Sparks will bring two full weekend closures of southbound traffic this month as a major road improvement project continues.

The Nevada Department of Transportation said sections of southbound Pyramid Way will close while crews excavate the roadway and begin initial repaving work as part of the ongoing project to resurface the road and improve sidewalks and pedestrian crossings between Victorian Avenue and York Way. Construction began in February.

The first closure is scheduled from 10 a.m. Friday, July 10, through 6 a.m. Monday, July 13, with southbound Pyramid Way closed between McCarran Boulevard and Oddie Boulevard.

A second closure is planned from 10 a.m. Friday, July 17, through 6 a.m. Monday, July 20, closing southbound Pyramid Way between Oddie Boulevard and C Street.

During both closures, southbound drivers will be detoured along McCarran Boulevard. Business access will remain available from side streets with signs directing traffic, and both eastbound and westbound Prater Way will remain open.

The project also includes continuing overnight lane reductions through early 2027. Both directions of Pyramid Way will remain open during the day, but traffic will be reduced to at least one lane nightly from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday nights through Friday mornings. Lanes will also be narrowed and shifted through work zones, with reduced speed limits during construction hours.

Drivers should expect moderate overnight delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes when possible. Pedestrian detours will periodically direct people to the opposite side of the road, and overnight construction noise is expected during active work. The construction schedule is weather-permitting and subject to change.

The approximately $14 million project includes resurfacing both directions of Pyramid Way between Nugget Avenue and York Way, removing and replacing between two and 18 inches of roadbed depending on the location, reconstructing more than one mile of sidewalks, improving curbs, driveways and sidewalk ramps, installing new pedestrian activated crossing signals at D Street, F Street, L Street and Holman Way, and upgrading roadside lighting.

The improvements are designed to benefit the approximately 28,000 drivers who use Pyramid Way each day. The road was last fully repaved in 2010, with minor resurfacing completed in some areas more recently.
