Sparks Police are seeing an increase in drivers diverting through neighborhoods to avoid traffic delays and are reminding drivers that residential streets are not designed for high-speed, cut-through traffic.

“In many cases, drivers are speeding through residential streets in an effort to reach their destinations more quickly, creating safety concerns for residents, pedestrians, and students,” said Sparks Police Chief Chris Crawforth. “We understand traffic can be frustrating, but speeding through neighborhoods puts lives at risk.”

Drivers are encouraged to:

* Allow extra travel time when commuting

* Avoid using residential neighborhoods as shortcuts

* Obey posted speed limits

* Slow down and watch carefully for children in school zones

“We urge drivers to obey posted speed limits, remain alert and use extra caution in school zones, where students may be walking or biking to and from school,” Crawforth said.

Sparks Police will continue monitoring neighborhood traffic and enforcing as needed to help ensure community safety.
