A Reno middle school is trying to boost their attendance rate by just walking to school.

The ‘Walking School Bus’ at Traner Middle School is in response to family feedback about walking safety within the school's walk zone.

Staff members organized the Walking School Bus, where students gather at Pat Baker Park and walk to school together, picking up other students along the route - which has allowed for a new connection between staff and students.

“It's a fun way to interact with kids. When you're in school, you're talking about school, but on the way to school we're talking about what we had for breakfast and who our dogs are. You know, it's a really fun way to get to know kids in a different setting,” says Lucy Dugan, principal at Traner Middle School.

Dugan added that attendance was already up 10% from last year but hopes the walks will help increase that.
