As of 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Interstate 80 westbound is open at the California border with chain controls until Applegate. Off-and-on freeway closures have led to delays for truck drivers.

"Yesterday I got to Fernley, just been sitting there waiting for [I-80] to open up," said Ronny Prine.

Prine said the storm put him and his truck behind a day, but some other truckers he spoke to had it worse.

"Some guys at the truck stop are like two days over there," he said.

Another trucker, David Delao, said it's his first time heading over Donner and his first time chaining up.

When asked about putting chains on, Delao said, "I'm actually enjoying it. I mean, I have nothing to do. So I'm like, 'you know what? I'm going to do it now before it gets dark.'"

Prine said he uses Google to check conditions on his route. But if there's a delay in getting information online, he gets real-time updates through the radio.

"I got about seven drivers I talk to all day," Prine said. "They're ahead of us and behind us, so we all know what's happening."

Delays in these conditions are inevitable. Delao says he can call his boss to give him extra time, or he can get ahold of dispatch.

"Last night, I had to call dispatch," he said. "I was like, 'Hey, it's storming. I don't know if you want me to go.' He just told me, "Hey, you know you got to make that load.' So I said, "Okay, cool."

While the reward can sometimes be great, Delao says the risk of taking jobs through winter weather isn't for everyone.

"Plan ahead of time and try not to take the snow routes," Delao said. "A lot of people take it because sometimes it pays more money."

"It is what it is," he continued. "All truckers have their own route, their own agenda. For me, if they have work, I'll drive it."

If truck drivers do take the winter jobs, Prine said, having all your chains and knowing how to put them on is a must.

"If you get to the chain check and you're missing one chain, you're turning around," he said.
