Two people are now facing charges after allegedly trying to extort an elderly woman out of $18,000.

It happened this past Friday in the Gardnerville Ranchos area.

According to deputies, the woman had received an email saying she had signed up for a subscription with a re-occurring fee.

When she called the number on the email, she was told she would get a refund.

The scammers then made it appear that they accidentally refunded more than was intended, and demanded that the victim repay them.

The woman called the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, thinking she was being scammed.

The sheriff's office says that these types of scams are becoming more common.

Deputies say to always be skeptical of any email, text message or phone call from someone you do not recognize. If you do suspect that something's wrong - call the police.
