The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is drawing attention to the dangers of illicit fentanyl in an online Facebook post marking National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day.

According to the post, the day preserves the memory of people lost to fentanyl overdose or poisoning, whether they were unsuspecting victims, experimenting with the drug, or struggling with substance use disorder.

The post states that the day also acknowledges the devastation caused by illicit fentanyl and other dangerous drugs, and seeks to increase awareness to prevent public health crises, self-harm, addiction, and death.

The Sheriff’s Office emphasized its ongoing role in combating the epidemic, saying, “We released our powerful 20-minute documentary in April, exposing the deadly impact of fentanyl on individuals, families, and our community. The piece is still relevant today and unfortunately will continue to be as we combat this dangerous epidemic.”

The post adds, “We’re not just raising awareness—we’re fighting back, with prevention and awareness. Inside our Detention Facility, we’re providing treatment, support, and second chances to break the cycle of addiction.”
