In a Facebook post, the Washoe County Sheriff's Office reported that on the afternoon of May 18, the Search and Rescue team responded to a call from an elderly woman who became lost northwest of Gerlach after her GPS led her into a remote area.
The woman was able to find limited cell service and called 911.
The Search and Rescue team, including the Special Vehicle Unit, SAR Deputy Ediss, and a medic, were deployed to locate her.
Just before dark, the team found the woman and escorted her to Gerlach for gas for her car, then to Fernley, where she was reunited with her family.
The sheriff’s office added, “As we celebrate Search and Rescue Week, thank you to the dedicated SAR volunteers on the ground and behind the scenes who helped bring this situation to a safe conclusion.”
They also reminded travelers, “GPS is a useful tool, but it’s not always reliable in remote areas. Before heading out, be sure to:
- Share your route and estimated arrival times with loved ones
- Bring a paper map or download directions for offline use
- Ensure your car is fueled and ready for the terrain
And remember, if you ever find yourself in a similar situation, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team is ready to help.”
