WCSD School Naming

The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees have voted to temporarily close Traner Middle School in June 2029 and rebuild the campus as a modern pre-K through fifth-grade school.

The new elementary school is expected to open in August 2030. Students currently zoned for Traner would attend other area middle schools during construction, including Sparks Middle School, which is undergoing reconstruction and expansion.

Trustees also approved plans to repurpose Glenn Duncan, Dorothy Lemelson and Rita Cannan elementary schools. Students from those schools could attend the new campus at the current Traner site, pending zoning recommendations and board approval.

The changes are part of WCSD’s 2023 Facility Modernization Plan, which aims to improve learning environments, expand student services and reduce long-term maintenance and operating costs.

The district’s Zoning Advisory Committee will recommend new enrollment boundaries for the 2029-30 school year.
