Heavy snow is stacking up across the region, and there is something many people may not think about until it becomes a problem.
In an online post, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue shared a reminder about protecting gas meters as winter storms continue and more snow is expected later this week.
The message is simple: heavy snow and ice buildup on or around gas meters can lead to harmful gas leaks.
Fire officials suggest that people should install a snow shelter to protect their gas meter and use a broom or brush to clear snow off the meter.
They also warn people not to pile snow on or near a gas meter when using a snowplow.
Caution is also urged when removing snow and ice from roofs and gutters above a gas meter. Falling snow and ice can damage the equipment below.
If you smell propane or a rotten egg-like odor, officials say to call 911 immediately.
The reminder goes beyond the meter itself. People are encouraged to check vents around their home and keep them clear of snow, ice, and debris so they can exhaust properly.
It is also important to keep a clear path to the meter for quick and easy access.
In the South Lake Tahoe area, fire officials say Southwest Gas will immediately suspend service when damage from snow and ice is discovered at a natural gas meter or on the customer’s receiving piping. Service will be restored once snow and ice are cleared, adequate meter protection is installed, and the customer complies with any requirements imposed by the local jurisdiction.
With more storms possible this week, fire officials say taking a few minutes now could prevent a much larger problem later.
