President Joe Biden has two leading roles right now: governing and campaigning. Effective communication is crucial as a candidate, and many believe that President Biden failed to do just that in the first presidential debate on Thursday.
It was the earliest debate in an election cycle, nearly two months before the major parties convene for national nominating conventions. This may be good for the Democrats, who are scrambling after President Biden's poor debate performance.
Media outlets such as CNN, the network that hosted the debate, published articles saying some democrats are calling for President Biden to step aside so that the party can nominate another candidate.
The RFK Jr. campaign held an alternative debate, during which he answered the moderator's questions in real time. We went to a local watch party.
With all this drama stemming from the debate, we decided to guage the public.
"One was struggling with cognitive issues, whereas the facts and substantive of what he was claiming and stating were valid to many people. On the other hand, it was a substance issue, where everything that was being said was invalid, not fact-checked, but delivered in a strong, forceful way," said Tom Martinez.
"A lot of other people and I were looking forward to that debate to see what would happen. Was Biden going to be up to what a lot of people said he was? A lot of the Democrats said that the Republicans were wrong, that they were very partisan. Joe had all of his faculties, and in different meetings, he was very coherent and made decisions that offered very good comments. That's what we were told, but was that the truth? He had practiced for a week to get up on that debate stage, and within three minutes, he was mumbling and incoherent," said Keith Hillen.
"I watched Trump lie with almost everything he said. And, I watched Biden stumble over his words quite a bit and not really respond to Trump very well," said Randy Andrews
"I love President Biden, but I think the magnitude of the job is getting to him," said Margaret Butler. "I came away feeling that he (Biden) should do one last thing for democracy, and that is to step aside and maybe pick someone else who would really have a better chance of winning."
"Chairman Xi saw that Putin saw that, the Ayatollah saw that, Kim Jung Un saw that. And we're in the most difficult situation we've ever seen," said Keith Hillen, "The question for Democrats is real simple: what are they going to do about it? They really can't run him."
It might be too late to replace President Biden as the democratic nominee, and it might also be impossible due to strict ballot requirements, such as signatures and cutoff times, which could prevent a new candidate from appearing on an official ballot.
However, no candidate is considered official until they're elected at their party's national convention, which is in mid-August.
"It would cause just a little uncertainty within the party; I think they should just stand on the issues. And the overall issues of our democracy. And a lot of individual human rights. And, I think that's what will carry the party to victory," said Tom Martinez.
President Biden stopped in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Friday, responding to the democrats who are openly contemplating whether it's too late to replace him on the ballot.
"I don't debate as well as I used to, but I know what I do know, and I know how to do this job," said President Biden.Â
