Alabama, Arkansas and Louisiana have gone to the U.S. Supreme Court to challenge abortion “shield laws” in California, Massachusetts and New York that protect providers who prescribe abortion pills across state lines. Attorneys general the Republican-led states said Wednesday that the laws undermine their abortion bans and their states’ sovereignty when federal regulations allow prescriptions for abortion pills to be made by telehealth and filled by mail. A legal expert said it's the first lawsuit of it kind over shield laws. It’s not clear whether the Supreme Court will take up the case, though it is in charge of refereeing disputes between states.
