Protests have erupted in Paris as part of nationwide demonstrations against rising living costs and in support of high school students’ grievances. Police used tear gas to disperse masked protesters throwing fireworks at officers in the Place de la République. Large numbers of riot police were deployed across the city. Protesters responded to calls on social media to revive the “yellow vest” movement, which began in 2018. The CGT labor union backed the protests, demanding higher wages and pensions. Authorities reported 140 protest actions outside Paris by midday, involving over 30,000 people, and at least 166 arrests nationwide.
