A widening U.S.-Israeli war with Iran has seen major strikes, missile fire across the region, and fresh fears for global energy and markets. On Wednesday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says a U.S. submarine sank an Iranian warship with a torpedo in international waters near Sri Lanka. Officials report more than 1,000 dead in Iran, over 50 in Lebanon, and about a dozen in Israel. The United Nations says 100,000 people fled the Iranian capital in the war’s first two days alone. Oil prices have jumped as shipping traffic through the key Strait of Hormuz has dropped sharply.
Iran is launching more missiles at Israel as attacks in the Middle East commence for a sixth day. Israel announced the incoming attack early Thursday and said it was moving to intercept the missiles. Meanwhile, the Israeli military said it had begun new strikes in Lebanon against the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group. The fighting continued after a U.S. submarine has sunk an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean Wednesday and the U.S. and Israel intensified their bombardment of Iran’s security forces. Tehran has warned of the destruction of the Middle East’s military and economic infrastructure.
