Inviting people over is a good way to strengthen social connections, but pressure to clean every room and prepare a table of good food before guests arrive can get in the way. Psychologists and experienced hosts say that striving for meaningful interactions instead of perfection not only alleviates some of the stress of hosting but makes for more memorable gatherings. They suggest organizing activities that give guests a way to settle in or mingle, planning a make-ahead or grazing-style menu, and assigning guests tasks or things to bring as strategies to create an event that everyone can enjoy, including the host.
