Prime Minister Andrej Babiš's political group is facing a strong challenge from the opposition in the Czech Republic’s Senate elections. The centrist ANO movement, led by Babiš, has 13 candidates advancing to next week’s runoffs. Opposition parties have 26 candidates making the next round. None of the five candidates who won seats outright is from ANO, while four represent the opposition. The Senate, controlled by the opposition, plays a key role in passing constitutional amendments. In local elections, independent candidates are winning most seats. ANO won in six regional capitals but not in Prague.
