Donald Trump roared back into office two years ago partly on the power of immigration. Trump’s pledge to seal the border and launch “mass deportations” earned him a wide swath of support, even in many heavily immigrant communities, amid frustration with the state of the border under former President Joe Biden. Nearly two years later, the public has soured on the president’s approach. More Americans now disapprove of Trump’s approach to immigration than approve of it, a striking turnaround that followed a nationwide crackdown that has seen thousands of working people detained, violent arrests caught on video and a string of deadly encounters with immigration officers, including the Minneapolis killings of two U.S. citizens.
