Michigan’s closely contested Senate race has become deeply personal for some voters. In Detroit’s suburbs, Jewish Democrats are questioning whether they can support Democrat Abdul El-Sayed who'd be the nation’s first Muslim senator if elected on Nov. 3. In nearby Dearborn, Arab American voters are growing alarmed by increasingly heated Republican rhetoric. Republican nominee Mike Rogers has portrayed El-Sayed as an extremist and a threat to Jewish voters. Rogers is trying to win over a traditionally Democratic constituency. Tensions are already high because of Israel’s war in Gaza that followed Hamas' attack on Israel. And for some voters, the Senate race is raising difficult questions about faith, identity and political loyalty.
