Progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers are competing for Michigan’s open Senate seat in a race that could help determine control of the chamber. Democratic Sen. Gary Peters’ retirement created the rare open-seat contest. Rogers is making a second bid after narrowly losing in 2024, even as Donald Trump carried Michigan. El-Sayed emerged from a bruising and expensive Democratic primary and has campaigned on progressive priorities. His primary opponent, Rep. Haley Stevens, endorsed Rogers in the final days of the race. The contest has drawn heavy outside spending as both candidates try to win one of the nation’s premier swing states and give their party an advantage in the fight for the Senate majority.
