Democrats have flipped a Senate seat in North Carolina as they try to recapture majorities in Congress and break Republicans’ unified hold on power in Washington. Former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper’s win against Republican Michael Whatley gives Democrats a key victory. Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff won reelection in Georgia, where former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman elected governor in any state. Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas won a Senate race in New Hampshire to replace a retiring member of his party. Voters said they're angry over high prices and the war in Iran and concerned about government corruption in midterm elections that will serve as a referendum on President Donald Trump’s second term.
Voters appear to be taking President Donald Trump's advice to pretend he’s on the ballot this Election Day — and that’s not a good thing for the Republican president or his party. Early returns suggest major swings away from the GOP. The AP Voter Poll found voters nationwide were in the mood for change, and roughly three-quarters of voters feel “angry” or “dissatisfied” with the direction of the country. The poll also suggests most are deeply unhappy with Trump, with roughly 6 in 10 saying they disapprove of how he’s handling the presidency. In Georgia, Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms was the first Black woman elected governor in U.S. history. And the Trump-backed redistricting gamble was backfiring.
