Authorities say a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed a man in Houston during an operation after he attempted to evade arrest in his vehicle. The Department of Homeland Security said the shooting occurred during a targeted operation Tuesday against a Mexican national, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was in the U.S. without legal permission. It said that the man ignored commands to stop and attempted to ram an agent. The shooting has drawn calls from some local Democratic officials for an independent investigation. This is at least the eighth death from an encounter with federal immigration officials since the start of the Trump administration’s intense immigration enforcement campaign in the U.S.
The son of a Mexican national fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Houston says he was a hardworking father who had been working toward a work permit after 35 years in the U.S. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was driving to a construction job Tuesday morning when he was killed. Federal officials say Salgado Araujo ignored commands after a traffic stop and tried to ram an officer. The victim's son joined civil rights groups Wednesday to call for the release of all video evidence. He says his father worked hard so he could send his three sons to college. The League of United Latin American Citizens is offering a $5,000 reward for information and telling people to not give their videos to ICE.
