Navajo Nation leaders are raising alarms after more than a dozen Indigenous people in Arizona and New Mexico reported having been detained or questioned during immigration raids, CNN reports.
Members of the Native American population have been asked to produce proof of citizenship during raids since Wednesday, Navajo Nation officials say.
The news has brought panic to tribal communities in both states and come amid the Trump administration's efforts to increase arrests of undocumented migrants in the country.
The raids and the exact number of Native Americans taken are under investigation, according to a Navajo Nation Council spokeswoman.
Navajo Nation officials have reached out to the Department of Homeland Security, the governors of Arizona and New Mexico, and ICE to address the reports
ICE has not responded to CNN’s request for comment.
